MARIN ACADEMY JUNIOR PROJECT 2009

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The State of the Bay Junior Capstone Project asks Marin Academy juniors to investigate and evaluate Bay Area communities; its mission is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry and collaboration, to deepen understanding of and connection to our region, and to provide a foundation of knowledge and experience to help MA students become active, responsible citizens who work to create compassionate, sustainable, and equitable communities.

ECONOMICS GROUP

Economic Opportunity and Challenge: Explore the economic opportunities and challenges that exist for the residents of the Bay Area. How do race, class, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, and other socially significant factors play into the landscape here? How economically secure are the people of the Bay Area? How does the local situation compare nationally and globally? Is it even possible to generalize? We read about the "two Americas" - one wealthy and secure, one dispossessed and living on the margins. How does that apply to our region? And what about the shrinking middle class?

HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS GROUP [WITHIN ECONOMICS]

We are the Marin Academy Junior Project 2009 group for Housing and Homelessness [within Economics], with emphasis on the ways in which the current economic crisis is affecting these two issues in Marin County, CA. Our research is based out of San Rafael, CA, and will extend throughout various cities in the Marin County/San Francisco Bay Area.
